Some
of the world's greatest entrepreneurs are found among those
who are struggling to survive. International
Development Enterprises (IDE) helps families in developing
nations increase their food production, incomes and quality
of life. Founded 1981.

IDE, U.S. Agency for International Development, Swiss Development
Corp., Interchurch Organization for Development, Food Industry
Crusade Against Hunger, Misereor, Plan International, Ford
Foundation, local entrepreneurial manufacturers, and distributors,
farmers, and others.

IDE
stimulates the local private sector in developing countries
to produce, distribute, and sell affordable technologies to
rural farmers. It establishes a free market "supply chain"
by counseling local manufacturers, distributors, and retailers
to make and sell irrigation pumps and other devices to help
poor farmers improve their productivity. It does not subsidize
costs to customers, but makes prototypes and designs available
to entrepreneurs, provides training, and supervises initial
marketing. Once the product chain is established, IDE withdraws
and lets local entrepreneurship take over.
